Abstract
Identity is not in itself something inherent to the biological birth of the parlêtre; like language, it does not come as part of any natural equipment. Its signature will rather be an operation that at the beginning depends essentially on the Other. Its named ifferentiates it from others by symbolically imprinting a mark, from which its psychic apparatus will gradually be configured into a complex 1network of experiences that, if all goes well, will soon allow it to exercise motor control over its body and —as a major novelty among living beings— the use of language. After a while, it will be able to recognize and pronounce it sown name, to partici-pate actively —now indeed— in the following steps toward the construction of its identity. However, this movement is hardly free from contingencies and tensions, opening a strong question regarding the achieve dormerely fictional nature of such a conjunction between iden-tity and proper name. Thus, it is appropriate to examine the enigmatic distinction established from the beginning of Seminar IX by Lacan between identification and identity: «If in psy-choanalysis we have to speak of identification, it is because there is no identity» (Lacan, Se-minar 9, 11/15/61).
