Abstract
Current epochal conditions seem to have torn away the veil that maintains the difference
between children and the adult world. “Virtual shop windows” doubly expose children:
on the one hand, by displaying them and proposing a mode of enjoyment that is not their
own; on the other, by unabashedly flooding their lives with violent or highly erotic
images.In this exploration, we reflect on the role that current culture plays in establishing
and sustaining this time of veils, waiting, and questions that childhood requires. We will
focus on the latency stage and the possible consequences that current cultural
transformations promote and encourage us to establish as an expected pattern; among
others, hypersexualization, hyperconnectivity, and digital helplessness.
We conclude with the need to preserve the latency period as a logical time that requires
veiling; that not only needs “protected hours” but also protected spaces, including virtual
ones. That is, to protect children from being exposed to an excess of reality. confronted

Las condiciones epocales actuales parecen haber rasgado el velo que sostiene la diferencia
con el mundo adulto. Las “vidrieras virtuales” exponen doblemente a las niños y niñas:
por un lado, al exhibirlos y proponerles un modo de goce que no les es propio; por el otro,
al inundar sin tapujos sus vidas de imágenes violentas o con alta carga de erotismo. En el
presente recorrido reflexionamos sobre el papel que juega la cultura actual en el
establecimiento y sostén de ese tiempo de velos, espera y preguntas que la niñez requiere.
Nos centraremos en la etapa de latencia y en las posibles consecuencias que las
transformaciones culturales hoy promueven e invitan a establecer como patrón esperable;
entre otras la hipersexualización, hiperconexión y el desamparo digital. Concluimos en la
necesidad de preservar el tiempo de latencia como tiempo lógico que requiere de
velamientos; que no solo precisa de “horarios de protección” sino también de espacios
protegidos, ente ellos los virtuales. Es decir, preservar a niños y niñas de quedar expuesta
a un exceso de realidad, enfrentados a aspectos como la sexualidad y la muerte a modo
del trauma.
